The South Trinidad Chamber of Industry and Commerce hosted its 2nd annual Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Leadership Awards on Friday September 18th, 2009 at the Hyatt Regency Trinidad. The gala ceremony was well attended by representatives of Government and professionals from the energy sector.
The feature address was delivered by Dr. The Honourable Emily Gaynor Dick-Forde, Minister of Planning, Housing and the Environment who emphasized the need for continued partnership between the private and public sectors in the promotion of sustained CSR practice.
Dr. The Honourable Amery Browne, Minister of Social Development was also in attendance, showing his continued support for the STCIC’s CSR Leadership Awards programme.
Six (6) companies were determined winners of this year’s CSR Leadership Awards, after a tedious process of evaluation.
BG Trinidad and Tobago Limited copped two (2) Awards in the 2009 CSR Leadership Awards: the “STCIC-TTTI Commitment to Transparency Award”, for the second time which examined the company’s annual CSR report; and “Recognizing the Commitment to Local Business Development” Award, a new award to this year’s programme based on a popular vote by local supply companies.
The new award “Strengthening Communities through Social Investment” was awarded to BHP Billiton Trinidad and Tobago for the company’s livestock and agricultural initiatives for the residents of Toco, Mayaro and Tobago. The company has funded numerous poultry programmes and a bee-keeping initiative for the students of Mason Hall High in Tobago.
Guardian Holdings Limited was awarded the “Sustaining the Environment: Making the Most of Green Opportunities Award” which was sponsored by the Ministry of Planning, Housing and the Environment. The company was honoured for its Guardian Wildlife Fund initiative dedicated to saving the Pawi bird, as well as its nation-wide “responsible waste management and collection” drive.
In the “Recognizing the Value of People” category, the award for best internal CSR practices was awarded to Methanex Trinidad Limited, scoring an almost perfect score by opinion of its employees. This spoke volumes for the company, in being employer of choice.
Omega Telecom Limited was the one company which fully entered the category, “CSR Pioneer-Small and Medium Business Award”. The company, a “mom and pop” organization in the business of renewable energy systems, was recognized for its CSR activity, though in its infancy stage. The company operates 100% off the grid and encourages the larger companies to follow its steps.
The evening’s events were also accompanies by entertainment from the Marionettes Youth Chorale and musical interlude by renowned pannist, Noel La Pierre. Errol Fabien was the evening’s Master of Ceremonies.
