EmailCARICOM has unveiled a united strategy on mitigating against the effects of Climate Change ahead of the upcoming UN Summit on Climate Change in Copenhagen next week. The intent of the campaign is to support a common, regional approach in dealing with climate change issues. CARICOM's Secretary General, Edwin Carrington, stated that the regional approach to mitigating against climate change was based on studies carried out by the Caribbean Community Centre for Climate Change (CCCCC) which concluded that global temperatures exceeding 1.5 degrees celcius will have devastating impacts on the Caribbean region.
Disastrous impact on the region includes the destruction of coral reefs, marine ecosystems and coastal barriers as well as flooding and hurricanes.
"It will erode much of the foundation of our tourism, our agriculture and our fisheries industry; it will wreak havoc on out plant life, our forests and most of all, dislocate our people. Immediate corrective action must therefore be taken if we are to avoid this widespread destruction" said Secretary-General Carrington.
He went on to further state that the Region will seek to consolidate its position with the Alliance of Small Island Developing States (SIDS), Group of 77as well as with the Developed or Annex 1 countries.
