History and Rationale

"Energy and People"
February 5 - 6, 2007
Hilton Trinidad and Conference Center

The Trinidad and Tobago Petroleum Conference (TTPC) has earned the reputation of being the premier energy event in the Caribbean . The TTPC attracts a very strong panel of speakers from Trinidad and Tobago , the wider region and beyond. Speakers normally include: Prime Ministers, Senior Government Ministers, senior technocrats, senior representatives of national and international energy companies, the leadership of the financial and commercial sector and distinguished academics. TTPC 2006 attracted over 450 senior participants, from Trinidad & Tobago , Venezuela , USA , UK , Canada and other countries in the region. The theme for the TTPC 2007 will be "Energy and People". This theme reflects the importance of people as the strategic engine to further the development of a vibrant energy sector both regionally and globally.

The increase in demand for oil, natural gas and related downstream commodities will require companies to expand operations, develop and adopt new technologies. Oil and gas companies will be required to explore and produce hydrocarbons from technically demanding locations while petrochemical plants will have to become more competitive and take advantages of economies of scale.

All these challenges will require companies investing heavily in attracting the best talent, while simultaneously developing and retaining that talent. This will require companies to treat human resource as a strategic asset. At the same time, the oil and gas industry is faced with the issue of an ageing workforce and a global employment gap. It is estimated that half of the world's professional E&P workforce will retire in the next 10 years. These issues, if not addressed, will lead to skills shortages in the global energy sector by the year 2010.

To address the supply-side aspect of the labour market, companies have increasingly turned to forging alliances with universities. In Trinidad & Tobago, alliances have been forged with the two local universities as well as with universities in the USA , Canada , the UK and Spain . With increasing complexity and increasing competition companies with also require efficient and responsive supply chains. This will place the onus on vendors to focus on human resource issues.

At the same time, energy companies are also becoming increasingly aware that forging good relations with host communities is good for business. Against this backdrop, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has emerged as a mechanism to foster deeper and more meaningful relationships with host communities. Integral in this relationship is the importance of meaningful corporate citizenship. The global thrust in CSR has been buttressed by the United Nation's Global Compact which has been embraced by many of the world's leading energy companies.

The TTPC 2007 will also deal with Health, Safety and Environmental policies which are considered as crucial factors in doing business in the global energy sector. The conference will also look at local content and local equity participation. At the TTPC 2006, the Trinidad and Tobago Government's Local Content and Local Participation Policy and Framework was formally launched by the Minister of Energy.

The TTPC is organised by two Trinidad & Tobago not-for-profit organisations, the South Trinidad Chamber of Industry and Commerce (STCIC) and the Geological Society of Trinidad & Tobago (GSTT).  Because the conference is organised by the industry for the industry, the programme reflects the interests, needs and concerns of the industry: in addition to keeping our registration fees at very competitive levels. Profits derived from the TTPC are re-invested into the local industry through the STCIC and the GSTT, by way of scholarships and other forms of support for our members.
